Janek is a semi-serif typeface inspired by old Polish signage. Rather then mimic specific style, it synthesises various inspirations. It is named after an Author of a classic Polish manual, that kickstarted this project, „Techniques of Lettering“ by Jan Wojeński. Large character set and style selection allows for richness of expression. Pointy upright and slightly decorative italic bring unique blend of aesthetics. It works well in rich text and as a striking display. Janek consists of seven italic and seven upright styles ranging from Light, to Black. With extensive language support and wide selection of features, it is suited for range of latin use cases. Janek is a contemporary throwback to the past.

The revival of this 1932 classic design by W. Schwerdtner for the Stempel Foundry in Germany brings back the fashion and culture of those bygone days. Wedge-shaped vertical strokes are thicker at the top than at the bottom while serifs are somewhat elongated, thin, and pointy. Here is an excellent choice for large display settings where capturing the spirit of the 1920s and 30s is important. Metropolis SG is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Songs of the early 1900s were anything but the status quo in topic or style. Excessively long titles, novelty tunes and "foreign themes" permeated the piles of sheet music in the local music shops. 1916's "Oh How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo (That's Love in Honolu)" covered a number of these quirks within one publication. This Hawaiian-tinged song evoked the mysterious ways of the South Seas islands, despite the abridging of Honolulu to "Honolu". Nonetheless, the hand lettered title of this particular piece of sheet music featured an Art Nouveau-influenced bold block letter with rounded corners. It's now available digitally as Smooth Sailing JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Joy Redick designed Blackoak, a big and heavy Egyptienne-sytle titling slab serif face, in 1990. The extremely robust style of the characters in this typeface was consciously distorted; creating letterforms that appear flattened and stretched, like a rubber band. Blackoak is drawn in the style of old wood tpes, just like those that one envisions when one thinks of the large, decorative posters that once filled Wild West America. The wood type collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC acted as a primary source of inspiration for this design. True to its rooks, Blackoak is meant for use exclusively in headlines in very large point sizes, or for logos and other corporate advertising purposes.

Designer Steven Skaggs wanted a versatile uncial typeface that was not simply decorative. Traditionally, a true uncial is a majuscule form, entirely lacking in ascenders and descenders. However, by designing Rieven Uncial, Skaggs found a way to use the true uncial as inspiration but retained a lowercase look and feel. Typically, uncials do not have italic forms but in order for Rieven to be a truly versatile face, it was imperative that it should be accompanied by an italic. The italic form owes much to the historical roots in the letra antigua cursiva of the 15th century humanist masters. Rieven Uncial was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in the 2010 TDC2.

SD Quainton was created in 2016 by Jonathan Quainton the co-founder of graphic design studio Sawdust. With a harmonious blend of Didone and Bauhaus elements Quainton embarks on a fresh and innovative direction. Drawing inspiration from revered typefaces like Bodoni and Didot, SD Quainton evokes the same sense of awe that captivated its creator. It is not only coarse but extremly black, and it is quite right to name it Black Letter in English. Ernst Schneidler, the designer, created the smallest possible counters. Still, this very coarse black letter is sensitive in detail and drawn with a high level of aesthetics. By the way, it was said in Schneidler's design class in Stuttgart that his number one student Walter Brudi had cut some of the characters with �silhoutte scissors� from black paper. Sharing his ideas and work with his students does not at all decrease or lower his copyright.Ganz Grobe Gotisch is not only a distinguised but also a very catchy design.(Albert Kapr in Fraktur -- �Form und Geschichte der gebrochenen Schrift�.)

🏆 Selected for Tipos Latinos 9. Bork is a display typeface that was inspired by an exercise in blackletter calligraphy. The style’s characteristic dark texture is seen mainly in the lowercase, with uniform spacing (where counterspace equals letterspace), shapes that recall the straight, interrupted strokes used in that style of writing, and the peculiar construction of certain letters. On the other hand, the uppercase aims for a more conventional roman construction, making it more legible for modern-day readers. It features an extensive character set that includes contextual and stylistic alternates, superior/inferior figures, arbitrary fractions, as well as several unusual ornaments, symbols and punctuation. Bork is especially suited for use in book covers, headlines, packaging and logotypes.

Tremendo is a gothic sans serif superfamily with a large number of widths and weights that make it a great choice for versatility, clarity, and dynamism. Built with both grotesque and geometric principles in mind, it's remarkably useful for everything from print copy to the largest display applications. If you're looking for a family that will serve your needs, and be noticed Tremendo is it! A note on the name: "Tremendo" is Italian for "too much, insufferable, awful." It's a tongue-in-cheek moniker for a family that's rather monstrous in size and forceful in impact. Give it a try and you'll see that it's much more of a workhorse than it may at first seem to be!

I live in a small hamlet near the Rhine river. It is a sleepy little town and it doesn’t have any facilities. For groceries I need to go to the next town. The only road leading to that town has been closed for half a year, because of ‘maintenance’, so doing groceries got a lot trickier. The fastest way to travel is through yet another hamlet in the forest, on a very narrow road with extremely bumpy shoulders. Yes, you’ve guessed it: it is a Bumpy Ride. Bumpy Ride was made using a so called Brush Pen. It comes with all the accents and a sweet set of alternates for the lower case letters.

In researching historic decorative material offered by Lanston Monotype as well as other metal foundries such as Barnhart Brothers and Spindler, there were occasionally ornaments that defied description. Perhaps it was a Victorian sense of humor or someone really thought these were a good idea or perhaps popular taste has just changed so much over the last hundred years, or our forbearers were completely insane. In any case, LTC is somewhat proud to present a collection of the most bizarre, disturbing and baffling printers ornaments we could find. Along with mutant fowl-children and frolicsome amphibians, there are also Masonic and other secret fraternal symbols that may not be creepy to everyone, but just enough to be moderately disturbing.

Sagarana is an elegant display typeface rooted in the style of romantic or didones letterforms; however, it is a sans serif with a cleaner appearance. The contrast and the vertical stress maintain the modern style, while the terminals, the finials, the proportions and the narrow look enhance its stylish personality. It could be suitable for editorial projects such as magazines, books or even for sophisticated environments, let’s say, fashion, department store, perfumes, cosmetics and so on. Sagarana was initially inspired by a Brazilian book cover from 50’s. The name itself combines the words “saga” (as in the English sense of “story”) and “rana,” a Tupi word (Indigenous language) that roughly means “showing similarities”.

We think of Cherritt as a 'bullnosed' serif face, because of its rounded off serifs. What that phrase may not convey is the friendly, approachable nature of this large family of faces. The design was originally inspired by traditional draftsmens' hand-drawn serif lettering, but has been given a precise geometric flavor that suits it for work owing its inspiration to any era, from Victorian times through to the purely modern. They are ideal for headings and poster work, but also for setting small volumes of text. Four weights are included in the family, as well as wide, expanded and condensed forms, true small capitals and openface forms. All family members embody extensive OpenType features.

Brushfox is a brush script written in a relaxed and fast way. Letters made with brush pen on paper. It is then carefully scanned and drawn into vector format. Pill Gothic walks the tightrope between a heads down, hard working, utilitarian sans and something that stands out, saying, "Look at me!" Designers looking for a type that will work in blocks of text for callouts, captions and headlines will find that unique balance with Pill. Pill Gothic asks the question: what is the effect of a few truly unique characters on the meaning of a type? In particular, the 'a' and the 'g', while relating strongly to the forms of the other characters, stand out from the traditional milieu of sans serif types. The name Pill Gothic came from early studies of the condensed weight where the lower case characters had the shape of a pill capsule.

Fortuita is a versatile sans fit for text or display. The name carries some of its history as it was born from logo sketches that fortuitously grew into a type family over eight years. It comes with a tall x-height, rendering it readable at smaller sizes. It has sixteen weights, eight regular ones, and their italics, each with small caps, something you may not see very often with sans serifs. It counts with old-style numbers that can switch to its lining, small caps, or tabular versions through open-type features. The family carries a distinct personality in its design that will lend itself to its subject, all the while without becoming distracting or detracting from it.

The idea of Transport originates from text found on the large wooden boxes used for transport. Such text is still stencilled on them in the same way as the companies have done for decades, at least. That explains the typeface's name, too. If you find some similarities with Devin, you are right. Transport is nothing other than a special variant of Devin. But since the two are aimed for totally different uses, I decided to use two different names for them. Transport is a mecane and its use is primarily as a headline typeface. But in small quantities it can be used even for body setting, if special effects are desired. Transport was released in 1994.

“The rounded shapes are like Chantilly cream or Italian meringue over a lemon pie,” says designer Xavier Dupré of his FF Sanuk Round typeface. Designed to work alongside the existing members of the FF Sanuk family, this sprightly sans serif offers a more mischievous personality than its counterparts. Raven hair and ruby lips, it may have been a trick of the light but I'm sure sparks flew from her fingertips. I definitely heard echoed voices in the night, of a restless spirit on an endless flight. If I remember correctly she held me spellbound in the night, with dancing shadows and firelight. Yes, I think I did see a crystal ball on the table, showing the future, the past and I did drink the potion she offered me, when I really should have gotten out of there fast. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it, your honor. It was that girl with the white hair, I'm telling you. She has my wallet too.

In thinking about a way to express the character of this script, it occurred to me that the splitting of the main downstrokes in the caps is almost like when knife cuts into butter. Picture a butter knife that slices into butter, slowly wedging the cut wider so that when it is pulled back, the remaining shape would resemble the main downstroke of any capital letter. The lowercase characters have an almost roundhand-like character but with a slightly more formal presence. Available in Postscript, Truetype and Opentype for both Mac and Windows, Beurre is ideal for Menu's, Invitations and pretty much anywhere you need a reasonably strong, but friendly legible script. DANGER NIGH is the horror display typeface with high contrast all caps style looks and feel nice balanced. Kwalett is a sans serif typeface family with low contrast and a high x-height. Kwalett has two widths, each with five weights and each weight has an italics. The family is derived from the thinnest member of the Qualettee family. As members of that family get bolder, their contrast increases. As members of the Kwalett family get bolder, their contrast remains very low. Kwalett is designed to work better as text than the Qualettee family. The family has two ways to get fractions. A few fractions are preformed and are accessed with the OpenType discretionary ligatures feature. The OpenType fraction feature uses the superscript and subscript numbers to create any fraction.

Sztos (2018-2022) is a remix of one of the most famous grotesques used in Poland – Baccarat (published by Jan Idźkowski i S-ka in 1922). My version loosely refers to the original. On the one hand, I wanted to modernize the drawing and proportions, on the other hand, I did’t want to lose the historical flavour and details in which you can still feel traditional printing. In addition to the fairly wide version of the normal style, there is also a narrow version. Thanks to this contrast, Sztos gives the possibility of expressive combinations of different styles. Printers Lot JNL is another eclectic mix of cartoons, ornaments, catch words, decorations and embellishments re-drawn from vintage source material used in the days of letterpress printing. For those who like to assemble their own larger borders, a set of elements is on the 2-9 keystrokes, but it must be noted that some manual adjustment is necessary to line up all of the parts in a complete border pattern. From a Happy New Year greeting to whimsical cartoon characters; from singular ornamental design elements to beautiful brackets, this mix of subjects is a great overview of the kinds of cuts found in printers' job case drawers in years gone by.

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Tendria typeface bases its letterforms on the logo for the French “Tendriade” mark. Clearly inspired by writing and hand lettering, Patricia Pothin-Roesch began her work on Tendria in Adobe Illustrator. After a few letters, she went back to designing the old-fashioned way: drawing by hand on layers of tracing paper. Tendria is a sturdy upright script face with a warm, childlike feeling. Its letters are like the typefaces often used in primary schools; the counterforms are large and open. The name Tendria is reminiscent of the French word for tender, “tendre.” Designers who set Tendria lovingly will reap rewards; this is an excellent addition to a display heading toolkit.

The English stone carver, artist, and typographer Eric Gill conceived the Joanna typeface as a personal design for use in books printed at his Joanna Press."" Gill saw his press work there as a continuation of the British Arts and Crafts Movement, pioneered in the 19th Century by William Morris. Joanna is notable for its almost vertical ""upright"" italics, and the unusally small size of its italic characters. Joanna is versatile and extremely legible. The letterforms are a bit narrow, so the face is very economic as well. A lot of text may be packed densely together onto a page with Joanna. Joanna mixes very well with other typefaces designed by Eric Gill; especially Gill Sans.

Some scribbles on a bar napkin, a note from a cute girl passed in history class, what is there to say but why not a typeface? Actually it's that late night, �let's get this typeface done� madness that causes these flights of fancy. Anything to relieve the boredom of doing all those kerning pairs. Or maybe it's sunspots? Ms Kitty is all uppercase letterforms so there are two versions of each letter, one in the cap position, another in the lowercase position. Besides the regular weight and bold, there�s a bolder and much bolder in the works. And perhaps there will be a "too bold to be believed" version. Depends on the sunspots.

In the last years our society has change a lot. Nowadays cities and countries are no longer static territories with well-drawn borders and a population perfectly defined. Globalization is a fact and the best consequence of it is the mixture of races, ideas and cultures, and this is exactly what this typography aims to show. Albollón is at once a semi-serif and a semi-sans serif typeface; it is a mixture made with the best parts from both sides. This way is how I understand a healthy society and a healthy design too. Albollón is designed to work in all types of text, both long and shorts, big and small ones.

FF Sizmo™ is available in two flavors. One is an honest, industrial strength, somewhat condensed, sans serif family. This type face fills one of the gaps between the world of Roman alphabets and that of linear alphabets. The first to be designed was the set of upper-case letters. The expression of these characters cannot conceal that they were originally intended only for the sculptor's use, as a type face for three-dimensional inscriptions. Their width proportions reflect a dialogue between the contemporary feeling and the legacy of classical Roman inscriptions. The type face was later complemented with a set of lower-case letters and elaborated into further designs. Its clear, concise letter forms end with small serifs which not only make the type face more refined, but above all anchor the individual letter signs visually to the horizontal of the text line. The austere construction of the majority of the letters is balanced by the more exuberant, humanizing forms of the most frequently used letters "a"; "e". (The three variants of the lower-case "e" enable to create rhythmically differentiated texts.) The letters in which a straight stroke is connected with an arch are designed in two ways. That means that the letters "n", "h","m" and the group of letters "b","d","p","q" are conceived in a different way. Thus an interesting tension is created in the structure of the text, which, however, does not endanger legibility. The economizing, slightly narrowed design of this type face predetermines its use for the setting of usual texts. In larger sizes, however, it produces a rather serious, even solemn, impression.

Smart Sans is a personal tribute to Leslie (Sam) Smart, the first type director to be hired by a major typesetting house in Canada. Smart was a twentieth century design pioneer who raised the standards of Canadian typography. Together with three of his peers, he established the first Type Directors Club in Toronto. After Smart's death in 1998, type designer Rod McDonald decided that something should be done to commemorate Smart's life and achievements. I had first thought of establishing a scholarship in Sam's name, but a typeface design soon replaced this idea," says McDonald. "Once I decided to design a typeface, however, it became a foregone conclusion that it would be a sans serif - for no other reason than that I loved the name Smart Sans." Two typefaces served as inspiration for McDonald's work. "Like thousands of designers, I'm keen on Matthew Carter's Helvetica Compressed series. And, when I was younger, I also loved Fred Lambert's Compacta," says McDonald. "I thought there might be a place for a small range that could take over from these 'old workhorses' and, in the process, bring a fresher look to the genre." McDonald drew three weights for the Smart Sans family, all ideally suited for setting attention-getting headlines and powerful display copy. The two-storied 'g' contributes to the design's lively personality, and the short 'r' helps maintain tight, even spacing. Smart Sans is the perfect homage to a great typographer, because it raises the bar on what to expect from condensed sans serif typefaces. Sam Smart would be pleased."
