Eckhardt Poster Text JNL continues Jeff Levine's series of sign painter-oriented fonts, named in honor of his good friend Albert Eckhardt, Jr. (who ran Allied signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing). Sign painters are the true heroes of lettering, for they make the alphabet and style fit the job. Bay Tavern is the first weathered version of our Tavern font that's based on Algerian. With three weights, open faced and outline versions to choose from you're sure to find the right style for your new project, restaurant menu, logo, t-shirt design or Pirate costume party. The signs of the Bosnian pyramids The pyramid researcher, Semir Osmanagic, began excavations in 2005 in Visoko, Bosnia, 30 km North from Sarajevo. Mr. Senad Hodocic, the curator at the local museum, pointed out at the pyramidal shape of the Visocica Mountain, which grabbed Osmanagic's attention. It is also suspected that the four adjacent hills, covered by plants and greenery, also hide the pyramids. The main sites of the excavations are called the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, and the results achieved so far have already proved that those structures are man-made and artificial. The Pyramid of the Sun is bigger and older than the pyramid in Giza, which was built by Pharaoh Cheops 4600 years ago. Gábor Szakács, who went to the site in June 2006 for the first time, found the symbols on the megalithic blocks inside the tunnel of the Pyramid of the Sun, which correspond to the ancient Hungarian runic writings. The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. In the case of French stencils the challenge was special, because of the varieties of different widths and weights between the stencil sets – so I made France No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. The most unique and eye-catching elements of typical French stencils are the figures 1, 2, 3, 7 and a specially 5. The figure 5 changes in style on smaller stencil sizes, its bobble getting replaced by something like a “breve”. The letters J and Q can differ in style too. While the local stencil lettering styles are gradually disappearing in other countries, there are regions in France, such as Normandy and Brittany, where these stencils are still in use today. They are used for technical lettering, which is what stencils were originally intended for, but also for ads and information signs in a more artistic or patriotic context. My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, teaching and writing his book on American Wood Type. I got to know him just well enough to gain access to his fabulous collection of wood type and wood type catalogs. Later, in the1970s, I tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West magazine. And again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so, over time, I’ve been adding some things and dressing it up a little. Sutro Shaded has existed for a few years as a one color, outlined, drop-shadowed display font. It seemed like it was just dying for a little color. I added five more fonts: Fill, Gradient, Hatching, Rules and HiLite. These fonts can be used in different combinations to achieve various effects. The Vinča script is a cache of symbols found belonging to the Vinča culture of the central Balkans over 7000 years ago. The symbols have been a topic of debate amongst historians. The Tărtăria tablets are three tablets discovered in 1961 in the village of Tărtăria(Hungarian: Alsótatárlaka). This is about 30 km (19 mi) from Alba Iulia in Romania.The tablets, dated to around 5300 BC, have symbols inclay: the Vinča symbols. Some claim they are a yet undeciphered language. If this is so, they would be the earliest known form of writing. In 1908 similar symbols were found during excavations, by Miloje Vasić (1869–1956) in Vinča. This is a suburb of Belgrade (Serbia), some 300 km from Turdaș. Later, more were found in another part of Belgrade. Since 1875 over one hundred and fifty Vinča sites have been found in Serbia alone. Many, including Vinča itself, have not been fully excavated. The culture of the whole area is called the Vinča culture. Although some of these symbols look exactly the same as some letters in Etruscan, Greek, and Aramaic, they are generally regarded as a an original, independent development.

I just returned from a short holiday in Japan. I stayed in hostels and small guesthouses and noticed a peculiar thing they all had in common: they love little notes, telling you where to go, what to do, how to use the microwave oven and when to check out. These notes were sometimes printed, but more often they were handwritten. I found that the Japanese way of writing roman characters is a little, well, unusual. The letters are correct, but they have that typical ‘Japanese look’ - most notably the a and A the b, d and g, the p and P and the t and T. I can’t really tell you what makes them look different, maybe it’s the proportions, but I do know that a Nippon Note is highly recognisable. Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.

I used to be a tour guide and spent a lot of time in Asia. One thing that I really liked, was having noodles, ANY kind of noodles, for breakfast! Breakfast Noodles is a very uncomplicated headline font: I made it while seriously renovating our ‘new’ home (a fixer upper farm), which means that this particular font was made over a period of almost 3 months… It wasn’t exactly a letter at a time, but close. I will try and make the next font in, say, under two months… Hopefully! In the meantime, enjoy this one!

Grafista is an extrapolation on what fonts are used for: in spite of the possibility to use it for setting text, Grafista strives when used as a texture library, the same way that one would set up tiles. Thus, Grafista was built as two different things compiled in the same font: the letterforms (for setting text) and the texture library. Both of the sets are monospaced (with every glyph having the same width), but the letterforms are half of the texture tiles' width. On the tech side, the letterforms are 500/1000 UPMs, while the tiles are 1000/1000 UPMs.

Almost every type designer feels the need, from time to time, to interrupt his or her serious work on complex text type systems for something more playful. In Luc(as)'s case this has often meant designing more typefaces. In the early 1990s, while working on Thesis, Luc(as) drew several display faces which were based on the shapes of TheSans but were either de(con)structive versions or experimental variations. Jesus Loves You All is a heretic thorny typeface vaguely based on the outlines of TheSans. Jesus Loves You was given a remarkable three-dimensional treatment in Abbott Miller's Dimensional Type project.

Modulario is a geometric sans with some disturbingly individual features. A few capitals owe a bit too much to Roman proportions. The circular O serves to distinguish it from the zero, and the luxuriously wide W and M are both pointed in the middle, although alternatives to the more contentious letters are available within the font. The lowercase shows a little more handwriting influence than is customary – we are used to seeing a writing-style curve at the base of the l, Modulario extends the influence to the i and a, and also sports a uniquely scripty s.

Rufus Script is a connected script font inspired by Palmer method of business writing (classic commercial lettering of the 1900-1915). The Rufus Script family comes in five weights, with automatically loaded contextual alternates. Character set contain over 500 characters per font for wide range of Latin-based language support. Include proportional and tabular figures, ornaments and popular recycling symbols used for packaging. Rufus Script is great for product packaging, book covers, poster design, editorials and greeting cards. May be also freely used for long inscriptions due to its formal structure and added small irregularities simulate not fully-trained hand.

Circulaire is a set of initial caps designed by Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos in 1926, and digitized in 2009 by Hans van Maanen. Unusual serifs, spurs and swashes make for interesting continuity points in the familiarly angled shapes, while adding a unique calligrapher's touch to the beheld forms. As far as initials go, this set contains the extra touch of personality needed to lead into a paragraph, which is preferable to the usual swashed italics that are widely used. Circulaire is available in all popular font formats and includes extended support for a wide variety of Latin-based languages.

Gobble gobble gobble! The Gobbler font was drawn with a leaky pen on a napkin at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis while the designer, Mister Chank Diesel, was waiting for some pot roast. “Apple cobbler drippings on the napkin add more character to the strokes of each letter,” says Chank. This font was originally named Modern Napkin, a free font released in 1997. Chank completed the character set, fixed some curves, and cleaned up some of the apple cobbler to make a more elegant font in 1999. Gobbler works great for either text or display purposes.
