Fishing boats actually race each other to be the first boat bringing it home. The fresh herring is called ‘Hollandsche Nieuwe’ (Holland’s new). This typeface, designed by Donald Roos, is based on the typography of Dutch fish shops and stalls. Mr Eaves is the often requested and finally finished sans-serif companion to Mrs Eaves, one of Emigre’s classic typeface designs. Created by Zuzana Licko, this 2009 addition to the Emigre Type Library expands the versatility of the original Mrs Eaves with two complimentary families: Mr Eaves Sans and Mr Eaves Modern. Mr Eaves was based on the proportions of Mrs Eaves, but Licko took some liberty with its design. One of the main concerns was to avoid creating a typeface that looked like it simply had its serifs cut off. And while it matches Mrs Eaves in weight, color, and armature, Mr Eaves stands as its own typeface with many unique characteristics. The Sans version relates most directly to the original serif version, noticeably in the roman lower case letters a, e, and g, as well as in subtle details such as the angled lead in strokes, the counter forms of the b, d, p, and q, and the flared leg of the capital R, the tail of the Q. The distinctly loose-fitting letter spacing of Mrs Eaves was applied also to the Sans version. This, together with generous built-in line spacing due to a small x-height and extended ascenders and descenders, renders the same kind of lightness and airiness when setting text that is so characteristic of Mrs Eaves. Deviations from the original Mrs Eaves are evident in the overall decrease of contrast, as well as in details such as the flag and tail of the f and j, and the finial of the t, which were shortened to maintain a cleaner, sans serif look. Mariam is a traditional-style Arabic headline face designed by the famous Arabic type designer Ismet Chanbour, who also designed Al Harf Al Jadid - another highly successful typeface from Linotype. Mariam is characterised by certain design features which contribute to its stylistically lively, yet graceful appearance: downward-pointing tails combining with the swinging finial strokes of certain characters, and the various cut-away" effects. This headline face successfully offers a wide range of applications, from very large, bold poster-size work to use at 18 point for emphasis in text work. Available as in the OpenType format, Miriam incorporates the Arabic codepage (CP 1256), and supports Arabic and Persian. Hennigar is a Neo Grotesque sans serif especially useful for display text and headlines. Many of the rounded letters are based on the appearance of the letter O with very little variation in width. Because of it's condensed nature the apertures are narrow with extenders that dip well below the base line. Similarly many of the lowercase characters are based on the lowercase o. Terminals and tails always point east/west giving the entire alphabet a very uniform appearance. Basic Latin, extended Latin, diacritics, punctuation, math symbols, symbols,Greek, Cyrillic, ligatures, fractions, alternates, and kerning are included. Kerning support for Macedonian and Serbian is included via alternate substitutions along with proper italics for Russian. Use Hennigar for a poster, web graphics, or book title.

The design of VLNL Mais started out as a thought experiment – "How would it look if you dressed up FuturaBlack in LatinWide serifs?” DBXL drew up the first sketches on graph paper in 2014. Although the concept looked promising enough, it ended up dormant in a desktop folder. To be resurfaced recently when covid-19 started spreading and we were asked to all stay home. The final design ended up with a distinct latino flavour due to the long spikey serifs. They look like tortilla chips. And as maize is the main ingredient in many South-American and specifically Mexican dishes – tortillas, burritos, nachos, tamales, tacos – a name was quickly found. VLNL Mais was designed by DBXL, and can be used for logos, headlines, flyers or posters (and not just for Mexican restaurants). It can be found in the VetteLetters vegetable section.

Everybody likes to have a picnic: some fresh fruits, cheese, ham, wine and so on. "Qualta" was initially designed in 2017 as a submission for a type design assignment while at typography school, originally launched under Alt-A Foundry, "PGF Qualta" was developed specially for Publishing Agency under the supervision of Peggo Fonts Foundry, now with a complete Small Caps set, classic and old style numeric figures, lining and tabular forms, scientific and fractional notation set, arrows set, light parenthesis set. Set on producing a geometric sans, it started with the circular form drawn from a 50s television screen. The bloated shape gave an illusion of protrusion and so much open space to the rounded letters. A broken stem was then added to the lowercase to provide a notch that allowed the typeface legibility in smaller sizes. The typeface was then developed into eight cuts with their corresponding italics. The lower case g includes a variation with a transitional link derived from the upper case Q’s tangent tail. Qualta’s original concept was designed by Isabel Gatuslao and was developed by Pedro Gonzalez.

Marathon was originally designed by Rudolf Koch in 1931 for Schriftgiesserei Klingspor. It is a roman with short ascenders and descenders. The serifs are small, but longer at the ends of the arms of E, F and L, M is rather splayed and is without top serifs, like M in other typefeaces designed by Rudolf Koch. The lowercase g has no link and an open tail, again like the g in other Koch types. U has the lower-case design. In the W the middle strokes cross, the lower case w has no middle serif. The figures are short-ranging. Ute Harder from the Fachhochschule Hamburg had redesigned Marathon with the help and supervision of Professor Jovica Veljovic. She has added a book weight to offer more flexibility with this beautiful typeface.

Bommer Sans is a warm and friendly type with a distinguishable look. It has been designed to add our twist to the flavour of English humanistic sans serif typefaces. Preface vs. Helvetica/Futura/Gill: a different strategy of text color. Whereas the established classes of sans serif typeface achieve a dynamic balance between stroke and space by combining a diversity of letterform with an evenness of fit, Preface switches the emphasis, driving out diagonals to create a dominant harmony of curves and perpendiculars, matched with a greater variety of inter-character space shapes—the result of extra width introduced in the “f” and “t”, and by the openness that accompanies the wide tails of the “ a” and “l”, the long ear of the “r”, and the serif of the “i”. En masse, and in keeping with the present trend in typography, Preface exhibits a coarser texture than the traditional sans serif faces, but one that is nonetheless even and precise. A few years ago I've discovered the work of one of the most prolific typeface designers of the Bruce type Foundry in NYC during late nineteenth century. Browsing Julius Herriet's work I found a very unique kind of ligatures in his patented "Old Style Ornamented" type design. Some letters were designed with a little top tail that allowed them to connect to each other. After that, I found that he also designed a single italic weight of the same font 7 years later. Since the beginning of the Opentype days I’ve been deeply obsessed with exploring different ways to build ligatures, so that lead me up to this point where I felt the need to create “Plethora”, this new font inspired by Herriet’s work. Extrapolating weights, adding variable technology and playing with additional interconnected letters and alternates. Definitely, Plethora means a large or excessive amount of something, and this font tries to bring back this abundance of details two centuries later. Available in 9 weights, from roman to italic, and also as variable format, “Plethora” supports plenty of latin languages and is a perfect choice for today’s design tides.

Ahmed is a modern Arabic headline face, first produced by Linotype-Hell Ltd. in the early 1980s. Originally developed as a simplified face, its design recalls the inscriptional and decorative tile work lettering of the medieval period. The strong treatment of the tails of certain characters departs from the more traditional style of tapering these finials, introducing a modern feel to the design. The contrasting proportions of the tall vertical strokes and the rather elongated counters lend a monumental look to Ahmed, allowing its effective use in titling. During the later 1980s Ahmed was developed into a traditional typeface, with the introduction of medial forms to improve character spacing and balance. Recently, Ahmed has been converted into the OpenType font format, ensuring its continued popularity as a heading face for newspaper typesetting. The Ahmed typeface contains two weights, Ahmed and Ahmed Outline. Both of the OpenType fonts include Latin glyphs from Clearface Gothic Roman inside the font files, allowing a single font to set text in both most Western European and Arabic languages. The two Ahmed fonts include the Basic Latin character set and the Arabic character set, which supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. They include tabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set of tabular European (Latin) numerals.

IronType (formerly known as Ironman) is an extra bold geometric titling face in the Art Deco poster tradition. A warm sense of strength and playfulness runs throughout this design. Triangular-shaped crossbars are some of its distinguishing characteristics. The face also contains some very amusing alternates. The tails of the alternate cap K and R extend below the line and the alternate cap N has a hump instead of a diagonal stroke. A handy set of lowercase letters with lining and smaller figures are also included. IronType Extra Bold is now available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Hellenic Typewriter is a slab serif for text and display, combining the typewriter aesthetic's balance of elegance and pragmatism with some of the extended western flavour of Hellenic Wide. Rounded strokes, some unorthodox slab details and playful, looping tails all add to Hellenic Typewriter’s warmth and approachability, while its typewriter-inspired proportions and clean forms provide rythym and an honest, confident voice. The lightest weights, laying bare the simple, partly-geometric and optically-monolinear construction, embody an assertive elegance. Ball terminals feature extensively throughout the design, in both lower and uppercase. This miroring of details creates a greater harmony between the cases and ensures that the true character of Hellenic Typewriter is not lost when setting in all-caps. Expressive true italics elaborate upon and emphasise some of the freer, more decorative elements of the roman styles.

Winslow Book is a playfully modern typeface with 6 weights and packed with styling features. Delicate features give it a playful feel while keeping Scotch Modern attributes of vertical stress, bracket serifs and ball terminals, while unique features give it a personality of its own. Winslow was designed to be a perfect typeface for text and display purposes. Because optionality is always fun, Winslow comes with an array of alternative features that add an extra bit of flair. From stylistic alternatives to tail serifs (in K, k, d, h, m, n) to complete new character designs (for g, y and &) a designer can choose which style they need for any project. Discretionary ligatures also create alternatives to all capital letter combinations. The family also comes with a playful set of italics that compliment the roman as well as their own set of alternatives.

BLOCK CAPITALS is a square, geometric, small caps display face that avoids fashionable foibles and exudes the neutral, unpretentious functionality of time-honoured block lettering. The family has three widths (Narrow, Normal and Wide), and the Bold weights are loosely based on well-used squared nets – 3x5, 4x5 and 5x5. However, the typeface escapes its grid origins whenever necessary with slightly modulated stroke weights, sensitive spacing and careful kerning. The aim is to retain the strength and simplicity of strictly geometric characters while introducing barely perceptible refinements that add elegance and usability. That said, letters and numbers line up horizontally without overlapping the capline or baseline, even the tail of the Q does not descend below the Baseline. Diacritics are modesty proportioned, accented characters extending no farther than necessary, allowing the leading on multiple lines of text to be kept to a minimum.

Working on The Lab late one night, evil comic book genius Scott Christian Sava realized there was something missing from his graphic experiment! No, not slugs and snails or puppydogs' tails, nor sugar, spice, everything nice and formula 'X'....No, what his nefarious scheme was missing were the actual numbers and letters with which he could complete his equation! BRILLIANT! What he needed was something antiseptically clean and readable, even at small sizes for megalomanical rambling as well as the 5 point type under the Bio-Hazard logo that nobody really reads, and yet also bouncy and energetic enough for the inevitable sound effects that might follow exclamations such as: "IT'S ALIVE!" or "IT JUST-MIGHT-WORK!" Segment B is a powerful display type family with 18 styles inspired by condensed European grotesques of 19th-century with a reference to the first grotesques, which differ in the contrast of strokes, but with clear geometric proportions. In Black weights, the letterforms are inspired by the aggressive industrial graphic design of the 1960s and 70s. Both have 3 axes and are adjustable in weight, width and 10? italic. It is a typeface with narrow proportions, distinctive character, high-quality outline and lots of details. Characters have oblique cuts, sharp tails and highly visible ink traps. All this makes the font more aggressive and edgy. The huge x-height with short ascenders and descenders allows this typeface to be used in blocks with minimal line spacing.
