African Shield is named for the cow-hide shields used by Zulu warriors. The shield was an essential part of the weaponry of the Zulu Nation. In the days of the great King Shaka, every Zulu warrior was armed with a shield, one or more throwing assegais (type of spear) and a stabbing spear. The high-contrast design of the shield has inspired a font that translates into exciting graphic designs.

Teamhair Tower is a “rough” monowidth font based on the face used on the old Sears Tower Gaelic manual typewriter. Teamhair was first digitized in 2002 by Michael Everson and originally used the MacGaelic character set on the Macintosh platform, and ISO/IEC 8859-14 on the PC. In 2008 Doire version 3 was released in OpenType format, completely compliant with Unicode encoding and with an extended character set.

Comalle is an organic typeface that rescues some elements of handwritten script, but its stroke does not necessarily answer to a literal calligraphy structure. So Comalle could produce a powerful impact on the page, it was designed with thicker strokes than its counter forms. The objective is that the black of the letter fills the page and causes a fastest visual impact than typographies that balance blacks and whites. One of the most important tasks of the Comalle design was to think of how to handle the unequal percentages of blacks and whites in the typeface. The peculiar thing, is that the precision work of the letter does not make the blacks, but the whites; this is the reason why in one first instance it was very valid to start off designing in a very gross way, nevertheless, the majority energies are put in the details of the design of counter space. The Klutz AOE Pro Family was inspired by the plethora of naive hand drawn lettering becoming commonplace in modern advertising. What I hadn't seen was a family of hand drawn typefaces, in a range of widths and weights, with both alternate capitals as well as small caps character sets...and so Klutz Pro was born. The letterforms started with a few letters my daughter had drawn which I expanded on from there. Pulling from inspirations in retro cartoon titling and modern hand lettering playfulness, the full font was born, with weights and width to follow. For some time, Eric de Berranger had wanted to create a distressed typeface design - one that gave the appearance of antique printing and showed signs of wear, yet was still highly readable. He was busy designing a new face called Maxime, when an idea struck: I realized that I could use these lettershapes as the basis for my antique typeface," he says. The two faces ended up being designed in tandem. While ITC Oldbook clearly captures the flavor of aged, uneven and imperfect printing, it also meets de Berranger's goal of being exceptionally readable in text sizes. Beginning with well-drawn characters was the key, and these were carefully modeled into the distressed forms. "The process was more difficult than I originally thought," says de Berranger. "The antique letters had to be tested and modified several times to work correctly." ITC Oldbook elegantly simulates antique printing in both text and display sizes. “A couple of years ago, when I was designing a package for a marmalade range, I started having a go at creating a typeface that would suit the package I had in mind. The whole process was intensely appealing to me: from merely using typefaces as an intricate part of my work as an art director, I started exploring the function of each and every element that a typeface consists of. The two things on my mind in designing a typeface for a marmalade brand were firstly, that I wanted it to have a hand-written feel, so as to exude that old-fashioned, homemade quality, and secondly, that it ought to have a certain sweetness and gentleness that would match the product. However, PF Scandal managed to outgrow its original inspiration. As I continued working on it, I toned down some of its elements to make it more versatile. And so, PF Scandal evolved into a typeface that has a contemporary, and yet handwritten look, which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses. Handy Andy Andy Lethbridge had only just completed his graphic design BA at the University of Portsmouth when he was spotted by Jason, who’d seen Andy’s exquisite hand lettering at his degree show and on Instagram. Keen to push the handwritten theme further, having recently launched a digitally-created, chalky script font (FS Sammy), Jason offered Andy a job and the chance to develop a suite of more stylised, truly hand-drawn fonts. Andy duly got out his pads, pencils and pens, and started experimenting with styles and textures. Magic followed. Imperfection perfected Most ‘handwritten’ typefaces are created entirely digitally. Not FS Shepton. From the start, the intention was to create a collection of alphabets of similar character but different texture and style – 100% hand-drawn and purposely imperfect, with the kind of inconsistent, organic shapes and textures of market stall signs, dashed off in chalk or paint. FS Shepton Regular, drawn with a wet brush pen, is solid with a rough outer edge and a casual but controlled feel. The dry brush used to create FS Shepton Light gives it more inner texture and a more formal, slanted, calligraphic style. FS Shepton Bold, drawn using a wider, looser dry brush pen, has a woody grain in the middle of its broad strokes and greater solidity where the brush moves more slowly. Fresh as a daisy Think of FS Shepton not as a family of three weights of the same font so much as a collection of three fonts penned by the same author. All of them – the light, regular and bold – were created independently as display fonts that offer something different to labelling, packaging, point-of-sale and advertising. MAS AMOR POR FAVOR (1) (more love, please) Fluire means -to flow- in Italian and that’s what this font is all about. The story began when a friend of mine asked for a tattoo with the word -Fluir- (to flow in Spanish). She didn't want a tattoo full of swashes and swirls, like I'm used to doing, but something more fluent, soft and minimal. My very first attempts were more related to copperplate calligraphy but I wasn't even close: I discovered that I needed to forget a little bit about the classic contrast and speed of the engrosser's nib and started playing with a tiny flat metal nib. Letters started to flow, and I immediately thought of turning them into a font. Inspired by the tattoo I created and by other tattoos I saw, I started the journey of what would be a very fun process. The result is a very cute, almost monoline font with a wide range of uses. USES If not used for a tattoo (my first ‘target’), the font delivers amazing results in combination with Fluire Caps: These two need each other, they go together, they talk. I designed Fluire Caps Down and Fluire Caps Up so it’s easier to manage their colors. Also there’s Fluire Caps Down Lines, which has a decorative thin line to add yet another dimension. Use the fonts in magazines, book covers, posters, greeting cards, weddings, lettered walls, storefronts! TIPS Since the font is Open-Type programmed, I strongly recommend using it in applications that support that feature. Also, the font looks way better when -contextual alternates- are activated, but it’s your choice :) Try Fluire, and keep flowing. MB Vinatage is a 6 weight font family with italics that has its roots based firmly in the type and font design of the early 20th Century. With some art deco touches in the standard caps like the N and the low bars on the E, F & H, by using the stylistic alternates these can be changed to give the font a more contemporary look. The same applies to the lower case letters, with an alternate a and g and a stylistic lowercase t. The family works great as a display font using the thin and heavy weights and just as well for smaller & bulk text. Stay traditional or go contemporary or mix it up.

Мир is Mir. The Russian word Мир (Mir) means both World and Peace. The rendezvous of the two terms seems quite unique and utopistic today, but it is comforting to see that it was natural at some time deep down in Russian history. Bits of both meanings were going through my mind while I was designing this typeface. Mir’s character set is multiscript – Latin, Cyrillic and Greek – and extends to many parts of the linguistic world. In fact it covers more than 100 languages. Stylistic consistency between the language systems make typographic border crossings painless even where national borders are still closely guarded. And in regions where mathematics, physics or chemistry are to be expressed, a rich set of OpenType features lets Mir master also these situations. Serious things are best be said in a relaxed, unpretentious way. So Mir doesn’t put on a show. Mir has authority without being authoritarian, it is serious but not stern. It can explain difficult things and stay calm and down to earth at the same time. Mir Medium has another useful feature: It can be freely downloaded and used by anybody anywhere. The font "TG APM" was designed by me for a boutique coffee shop. This font is used in the coffee shop's logo and draws inspiration from the sun and the moon. The sun represents daytime, while the moon symbolizes nighttime. The intention is to convey that coffee is available throughout the day, helping you stay awake and composed.

A friend bought me a Chinese calligraphic brush set in a beautifully decorated box. I started to letter the alphabet on parchment, in my own hand, using quick strokes and found the resulting script had an interesting energy to it. After further refinement in my font application software 'Swordtail' was born. A great free-hand script.

Roncial is an Ultra Bold font with a hint of serif. This is one of the fonts originally designed before the advent of digital and started out being a bolder, slightly serifed version of Folio Extra Bold which was one of the boldest fonts at the time (old metal set). It is available as Roman and Italic.

Transmogrified started out as a special project for a client. It's a lovely sans serif font, casual, with sweet swirls over here and there. It is based on Transmogrifier , from which uppercase glyphs were selected. Next, new lowercase glyphs were drawn and a bold cut was also developed for added flexibility. Let your messages be transmogrified!

Flip Spatters is a very detailed font. It looks like blotches/ink spatters or graffity. It has a lot of characters (~215) and the spatters are different and detailed. But unlike some other 'crazy' fonts, Flip Spatters even looks brilliant using a font size starting from 9pt. So you can use it for text and graphic utilization.

Between the most rigid geometric letterforms and the most expressive calligraphy works there are, undoubtedly, countless combinatory possibilities. Ingeo is just one of them. Located very close to a geometric approach it shows, however, a clear willingness to accommodate in its structure the calligraphic traits of our alphabet. In Ingeo geometry grows from the inside, meaning that all its counters are based on geometric shapes. Around them, contours are later defined. The solid mass resulting from that interaction is modulated in specific areas in a way that evokes the way a writing hand finishes a letter and starts the following one. It all started with making of a simple all-caps font. I drew the whole alphabet, numbers all else needed - but something wasn't quite right...the lettershapes were fine, but quite boring. Then I took a drastic decision: I started all over again ... meaning, I printed the whole thing, messed it up using a wet cloth and wrinkled the paper - then scanned it all again, and imported all the graphics yet again. A lot of work, yes - but personally I think it was worth it! But anyway, that's the story of how Primitivus was made ... well, almost, but not quite ... but that's another story! Use Primitivus for anything that needs that special kind of look were handdrawn letters meets grunge! Play around with the 4 different versions of each letter to make your text look even more random and natural!

Fontoddler Font Family, This font was created with the personality, in mind, of my two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter Chloe Bella. I believe strongly that fonts have personalities that’s why we refer to their members as ‘characters’ or to be more accurate, ‘glyphs’. This font is playful, bold, colorful in form and design, a bit irregular, a bit informal, a bit irreverent, a bit humorous, a bit sassy, and a bit independent just like my little one. Graffiti is all repetition. Style, like brand logos, makes the repetition more recognizable, but style should never keep you from reading the word. Chanse Fresh was a project to make a handstyle font that wasn't self-concious and overworked - the font is clearly readable and fresh AF. Round is the base font with a thin version to create hierarchy or for longer pieces of text. Both round and thin have a "wet" drippy mop tag version best for key text.
