My kids like to read Donald Duck magazine. They have boxes full of old editions that we bought second hand. Most of the comics are well-used, but there are some in near mint condition. I thought it would be nice to create a font that mimics the lettering found in comics. Mint condition is a very nice, very friendly handmade comic book font that comes with extensive language support (including Vietnamese and Cyrillic), plus two sets of alternate glyphs.

Elbow Grease was made with, yes, you’ve guessed it: Elbow Grease! It started off as a grungy font, but it didn’t look right, so I reworked all the glyphs. Then I forgot to save the font, so I had to start all over again. Naming a font was never this easy! Elbow Grease is a didone-ish font with some seriously warped glyphs, a lot of panache and a ‘get-it-done’ attitude. Also comes with a toolkit full of diacritics.

Some words from the designer... The bold, playful element is everything in ITC Surfboard. West coast designer Teri Kahan was inspired by California's surfing lifestyle, and the letters of this alphabet dance along the writing line. The vitality of ITC Surfboard comes from the tension between its very free shapes and the precise edges and angles that create them. This all-capital font has deliberately tight spacing and works best in large sizes. Also included are fun, abstract surf/sail graphics.

Morgenfrisk is one of those words you cannot really translate: it is Danish for ‘feeling refreshed after a good night’s sleep’. Morgenfrisk font is a handmade, thin school class font - very legible, very neat and very nice too. I found the original letters in a Speedball™ Text Book. There were only so many of them, so I designed the missing ones myself. I adjusted some of the original letters to a more contemporary look. Comes with a frisk amount of diacritics!

For some reason I had to think of Moby Dick (the classic book by Herman Melville) when I was busy working on this font. No, I don’t live near the sea, nor do I have a pet whale. It’s just one of those things… Whalebone (named after Captain Ahab’s prosthetic leg) is a handmade, all caps brush font. It wasn’t actually made with a brush; I used a broken satay skewer and Chinese ink. Whalebone comes with discretionary ligatures for double letter combinations.

I have never stayed at a boarding house myself, but I’ve heard some horror stories. When I have finished painting the three fonts (using Chinese ink and a small brush), I didn’t have to think long for a name. Boarding House family consists of three distinct hand painted fonts - the complement each other, but can be used separately as well. Use Boarding House for your halloween posters, mystery novels or websites. All fonts come with an attic full of diacritics.

I came across a photo of Al Capone and some of his henchmen when searching the internet for something completely unrelated. We don’t have a history of notorious gangsters in Holland, so I was intrigued by Capone all of my life. Packing Heat is 1930’s slang for ‘carrying a gun’, which I thought befitted this handmade font with an early 20th century look. Packing Heat comes with multilingual support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs.

Figuera Variable is inspired by Victorian style serif typefaces. With a different width and weight you can make your design more fluid using only a single font family. These new fonts come with a new feature allowing you to create a variable widths and weights without using additional fonts. Some time ago, when we were working on our Merrivale family, it occurred to us that an adaptation of the design, incorporating selected Blackletter elements, would be in the best traditions of 19th and 20th century blackletter revivals, which combine all the spirit of the middle ages with modern legibility-think of Goudy Medieval as an example. In the case of Merrivaux (best quality faux-medieval name there!) we've produced a typeface which has the ready legibility of Roman titling, but which gives a subtle blackletter feel. The regular form of Merrivaux is incised with a visible midline, a solid form with identical metrics is also offered. Both forms include a range of opentype features including ligatures, fractions, old style numerals and terminal forms. Merrivaux is ideal for posters, signage and design work, where a touch of that 'Olde-Worlde' feel is needed.

The family has 14 weights, ranging from Thin to Black (including italics) and is ideally suited for advertising and packaging, book text, festive occasions, editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, poster and billboards, wayfinding and signage as well as web and screen design. The powerful Eknaton comes with slanted slabserifs, a new way to add some spring to the old Egyptian slabs. Eknaton echoes the tradition that started with Napoleon's Egyptian campaign 1798, and the simultaneous looting of Egyptian art. The imports led to new ladies fashion in Europe, new architecture and new typefaces like Antique (Figgins, 1815) and Egyptian (Caslon, 1816). The Egyptian faces were also the origin of the famous Clarendon (1845) and Ionic No.5 (1925) as well as the rest of "the legibility types". In the 20th century the slabserifs became popular again with Bauhaus incarnations like Memphis (Wolf, 1929) and Beton (Jost, 1931). The Bauhaus movement, otherwise anti-serif, liked the architectural influence in Egyptian slabserifs. The Bo Berndal design of Eknaton puts some speed into the old Sphinx - the cat is back, in better form than ever! Bo Berndal, born 1924, has been designing typefaces for 56 years, for Monotype, Linotype and other foundries. Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. Lionheart comes in all popular font formats, with some alternates placed in accessible cells of the character set.

Inspired by 15th century Venetian italic book texts and based on examples from volumes on the history of type. Fourteen64 has a rugged charm and lots of character featuring 'Roman' capitals with italic lowercase. Includes alternate characters, extra ligatures and a small selection of medieval ornaments.

Context Regular is a condensed inline font with a stencil inline glyph - this makes for a smoother visual join of the stems. Chocolate Bar JNL emulates hand-lettering on the sheet music for a song selection called "Shoe Shine Boy" from Connie's Hot Chocolates of 1936 (an all-black musical revue). The lettering was not found in the song's title, but rather in the name of the show itself.

Designed for ParaType in 2007 by Isabella Chaeva. The type is based on Bukvarnaya (TextBook) photocomposing version designed in 1987 by Emma Zakharova. The initial Bukvarnaya for metal composition was created at Polygraphmash in 1958 by Elena Tsaregorodtseva. It was developed for primers and the first level school textbooks. An early sans serif ('Grotesque') with half-closed static letterforms. For use in book and magazine typography, advertising and headlines. Also may be useful as screen font.

Yellow Balloon is a typeface named after my two year old son's favorite book: The Yellow Balloon by Dutch author/illustrator Charlotte Dematons. Every night before he goes to sleep, he wants to read the book and manages to find the yellow balloon on every page. Yellow Balloon is a cartoonesque font with an uneven baseline. It would look great on book covers or posters. Yellow Balloon comes with extensive language support.

It’s said that what goes around, comes around, and there’s no better proof of the saying than this typeface. Originally released as Latin Antique by the Stephenson Blake foundry in the 1880s, this face achieved renewed popularity in the 1950s, and it’s back again as, like, Coolsville, Daddy-o. Both versions include the complete Unicode Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, as well as localization for Lithuanian, Moldovan and Romanian.

Gramatika is a typeface family of sans serif from the neo-Grotesque styles. There are four different weights available, ranging from light to bold. Each weight is equipped with an italic style that is a bit like an oblique style and lifted by some unique characters, with an alternative to the single story ‘a’ for example. Inspired by the famous grotesk typefaces such as Akzidenz Grotesk and Bauersche Giesserei’s Venus Grotesk, Gramatika shapes and styles are consistently adjusted for each character to meet the classic contemporary style, treated with some ciruclar-based characters in descender g, y. By balancing balance and flexibility, Gramatika was established to create alternative communication for current trends. The latest version of this fonts comes with Latin plus script coverage, and supported by the basic characters of Cyrillic and Greek.

The robust and contemporary sans-serif typeface Rethink, comes with strong characteristics. The typeface is made for work in text as well as in display. It features nine weights in two styles, including Small Caps, a set of contemporary OpenType functions, multiple figure sets and a rich language support. Rethinks main characteristics are the non-straight stroke endings and a slope that might come in an unexpected direction. It brings a bit of movement to the baseline and some attraction to the shapes in bigger sizes. These details are designed to ‘disappear’ in smaller sizes and to not disturb a reading process. Rethink was designed with the idea to help spreading bold ideas ond strong opinions, to support the work of activists in contemporary movements, to design statements with impact and meaningfulness.

Meet Haggis! Inspired by the Insular Half-Uncial and Uncial typefaces that have long been associated with Scotland, Ireland, and their Celtic cousins, Haggis is an unusual creature. Unlike traditional Uncials, he's monoline, rounded, sausagey, and distinctly lighthearted! Use him for posters, signage (especially pub signs!), kids' stuff, and packaging — anyplace a little quasi-Celtic flavor is desired, but with a fun twist. Must we say it? He's a Funcial! Tongue-in-cheek though he may be, Haggis has some great features. He comes in Lean and Overstuffed forms, and has full true small caps, standard(ish) Roman alternates for the more out-there characters, lots of ampersand forms (including a true[ish] "Et" and a Tironian and), fun quasi-Celtic bullets, and lots of ligatures. Try him out today — with some tatties and neeps!

Who is not totally captured when looking at those marvelously handmade old manuscripts, where letters, borders and elements were so masterfully realized with some touch of Gold leaf (or Silver in some cases) that was making of an ordinary book a piece of art?
