This rough font, was created inspired from a lot of various european documents dated from the end of 1600's. We were in search of a hand to accompany with "The Treasure Island" novel by R.L. Stevenson, and this seems to be the good one. It is a "Pro" font containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. We have also included a few old English specific abbreviations. The numerous alternates (four sorts of standard lowercases and two sets of capitals) and numerous ligatures allow to made the font looking like a real various hand. Using an OTF software, the features allow to vary each character without anything to do but to select contextual alternates and standard ligatures and/or stylistic alternates options. The "Ru" version is a supplementary choice, offering Russian Cyrillics.

The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. We have used a facsimile from this catalogue to reconstruct this present font, as one example of the poet’s personal hands but also as a typical example of the British quill pen handwriting from about mid 1600’s to the beginning of 1700’s . Awwam refers to the region of Awwam which is now thought by most scholars to be Ma'rib or the famous temple of Awwam otherwise known as Mahram Bilqis. The Awwam temple—Arabic Haram Bilqis or Mahram Bilqis—is a Sabaean temple near Ma'rib in today's Yemen. It was built by Mukarrib ‘Yada'il Dharih I’ between the 7th and 5th century B.C. Also, one of the most frequent titles of the God ‘Almaqah’ was the Lord of Awwam. Almaqah was the main God of the ancient Yemeni kingdom of Saba' and also the kingdoms of D’mt and Aksum in Eritrea and Northern Ethiopia. Different members of the ruling dynasties of Saba' regarded themselves as Almaqah’s children. Awwam is a wide and headline Arabic display typeface. The main trait of this typeface is the wide, curved, and streamlined design of its wide kashida, letters, and ligatures. This feature renders it as one of the modern stylish typefaces used for headlines, titles, headers, banners, and captions. Among the distinguished letters of Awwam typeface are the “Alef”, “Qaaf”, “Waaw”, “Yaa”, “Gheen”, and others. Moreover, Awwam typeface has a character set which supports Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and simple Latin letters/numerals with a limited range of specific Arabic and Latin ligatures. a, g, k and y It was a forensic examination by Jason Smith of his existing designs that laid the groundwork for FS Jack. Jason made a list of unique characteristics that would give the sans serif font its typographic thumbprint, which included an unusually large x-height and slightly off-the-wall letters like the lower-case “a”, “g”, “k” and “y”. “I wanted to make something that was slightly uncomfortable,” says Jason, “and in doing so simplify the quirkiness down to a few letters.” Fernando Mello did “the rest of the cooking”, filling the design out and making the additional weights. Tipos Latinos Upon its release in 2010, FS Jack was submitted by Fernando, who is Brazilian, for the esteemed type design biennial, Tipos Latinos, where it was selected as a winner in the Families category. It went on to be selected for type exhibitions throughout Latin America and around the world. “FS Jack is a workhorse,” says Fernando, “but also very ownable and distinctive, and available in a good range of weights, crafted by Jason and I.” Corporate “FS Jack took a couple of years to get noticed and is still fairly underused,” says Jason, “which is good in a way, for our Brandfont clients that have adopted it.” FS Jack was chosen as the signature font for The Shard in London, from its signage down to business cards. Fontsmith also worked with Lloyds Bank to customise FS Jack into a bespoke font for the bank’s updated brand identity – part of Fontsmith’s Brandfont service, which you can read about here. Circe Rounded is an extension for a popular Circe typeface, with rounded terminals. Bold and ExtraBold faces have two variants with different radius of the roundings. Circe Rounded is even more friendly than the original Circe. The typeface is designed by Alexandra Korolkova and Alexander Lubovenko and released by ParaType in 2015. It is known that the Circe typeface is distinguished by mild and humanist nature being formally a geometric sans-serif. However, as an experiment we decided to make it even softer: Circe now has a version with rounded terminals — Circe Rounded. Rounding is generally regarded as a mechanical operation, but in this case a lot of manual adjustment was needed because of the humanist nature and peculiarities of type design. Moreover, the two bold styles now have two options: a basic one is slightly rounded and an alternate one is fully rounded. In Circe Rounded we decided to dismiss characters with swashes that are rather inappropriate in such a rounded font, but the stylistic sets and alternate characters are remaining. Rounded terminals make an open and friendly typeface even more childish. For example, in quite large point sizes (because the x-height is still not big) it can be used as a body type in infant books. Circe Rounded, similar to Circe, has alternative forms of lowercase characters, which are called “infant” and are used in publications for children’s reading. However, a humanist basis is preserved alongside with its softness and it does not allow it to be as “plasticine” as many other rounded fonts. Two of the most obvious areas of possible application of Circe Rounded are everything for children and everything edible, especially all that is sweet and puff. However, we believe that there are other options.

Although geometric Sans Serifs have been in vogue for nearly a century, they have never been as ubiquitous. It is not improbable that the old adage would be phrased: “When in doubt, set it in geometric sans”, had it been composed today. Have we not had enough? We think, not. Postmodern times demand a variety of expressions. The vision behind Geometria was to revisit the perennial favorite to lend subtle individuality to its tried and true forms. Geometria stands out in the crowd of similar fonts thanks to its complicated nature. It combines dynamic elements with a certain degree of stability. A slightly higher waistline of the capitals contributes to their distinctive appearance. If the upper case refers to the American grotesques of the 19th century, the lower case tends toward the forms of the Renaissance in its proportions. Geometria is a typeface of clean shapes that is well-suited for continuous reading, and it sets remarkably well. At the same time, it can be friendly, even flirtatious. Its distinct personality combines seeming opposites. At times it may appear serious, at times playful. On occasion, it may be deliberate, other times dynamic. It could seem rigid, then elegant. It is a typeface that could be perceived either as cutting-edge, or as nostalgic. A careful and discerning typographer will bring out and emphasize those aspects of its multifaceted personality that are needed to solve the problem at hand. Geometria consists of 24 fonts — eight weights with matching italics and narrow styles. Mariam is a traditional-style Arabic headline face designed by the famous Arabic type designer Ismet Chanbour, who also designed Al Harf Al Jadid - another highly successful typeface from Linotype. Mariam is characterised by certain design features which contribute to its stylistically lively, yet graceful appearance: downward-pointing tails combining with the swinging finial strokes of certain characters, and the various cut-away" effects. This typeface comes from a self initiated project called Sápmi, which aims to contribute to keep a group of minority languages alive through solving issues in the education environment. This re-thought edition takes the name of Aanaar and joins our library with a bigger character set and two new weights which complete the typeface providing a big typographic palette as well as adding stylistic two-story a and g for more advanced readers as well as to enable the typeface to be used in other environments. The typeface was originally designed for children’s text books. Analysing kid’s typeface design, we identified some important problems and solved them within the boundaries we had. The main concern in a typeface which will be used by children is letter recognition, as they have not yet fully develop their reading skills. For example, letters like “a” and “g” share a very similar structure in this particular kind of typefaces, where the only distinctive part is the descender of the “g”. It is known that the lower part of the letter is the less important feature when reading, therefore we decided to make a clear distinction between them by having an “a” with a spur on the top right. Découpé Based on a French children’s play from 1906. In a car boot sale André Toet found a funny looking box containing a lot of cut out cardboard figures, in fact it looked a bit like a geometric puzzle! He played around a bit and succeeded to create a workable typeface with it ! The interesting thing about this particular font is, that in fact it’s organized chaos. The 26 letters of the alphabet are a mix between caps and lowercases, so within one word caps and lowercases will be used next to each other. It’s a very useful font for different projects.
