Directa Serif Variable is a text type family in one single font file. It explores new possibilities for the original type family released by Outras Fontes some years earlier, which is designed to save space with the highest readability. The variable font is composed of two axes of variation: Weight (100–900) and Italic (0–1). It also contains 18 predefined styles between Thin and Heavy and their respective italics. So now you can adjust the weight of the type by interpolating it in real time using any variable font compatible app. There are hundreds of possibilities between the values of 100 (Thin) and 900 (Heavy). And if you're feeling adventurous, you can also use the Italic axis to interpolate instances between Roman (0) and Italic (1) and see what happens in the middle. Linotype Boberia is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Designed by Bo Berndal, its historical roots lie in the neoclassicism of the turn of the 20th century. The slender letters with a large x-height and marked stroke contrast give the font an elegant character. The nostalgic, flowing forms are typical of Art Deco fonts and allow designers a number of possibilities for the font’s use. Boberia includes regular, italic and bold type styles.

Gummed Alphabet JNL was modeled from a 1960s-era package of foil embossed gummed letters. This type of lettering device was sold through stationery, variety stores and similar merchants, and could be used for personalizing items or making small signs.

Ukrainian type designer Melnikov Sergey created Flomic font between 2015 and 2016. Flomic is a geometric sans built from a folded lines. Most effective when used in short words or phrases at larger sizes, where the details can be appreciated.

An extra-bold, hand lettered type design with a casual feel was used for the 1942 movie poster “Tortilla Flat”. This served as the inspirational model for Movie Ad Deco JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Malabar is a type family for extensive text. Its design was developed with a nod toward newspapers. Malabar's characters are seriffed and of the Old Style genre. A strong diagonal axis is apparent within the curves. Sturdy serifs help strengthen the line of text in small point sizes, as well as define the overall feeling of the face. Malabar's x-height is very high, a deliberate choice that makes the most important parts of lowercase letters visibly larger in tiny settings. The height of the capital letters is also rather diminutive, allowing for better character fit, as well as eliminating a bit of clumsiness in German, which often includes quite a few uppercase letters. Diacritical marks and additional alphabetic forms required by many Western, Central, and Eastern European languages are naturally a part of the character set, including those needed in the Baltic states, for Romanian, and for Turkish. Malabar's accents are bold and direct, sitting well with their base glyphs. The family includes three weights, each with a companion Italic. Malabar Regular is equipped with small caps, and both it and Malabar Italic include oldstyle figures. All members of the family have both proportional and tabular-width lining figures, as well as special variants of certain punctuation marks vertically adjusted for all-caps text setting. Malabar is informed both by contemporary ideas of typeface design (sheared terminals, the wider-drawn s) as well as by 16th-century masters. Malabar Heavy and Heavy Italic are very loud; their blackness almost shouts out from the page. The Regular's wedge serifs become more slab-ish in nature as the letters' weight increases. Malabar Heavy and Heavy Italic are best relegated to headline use only. Malabar Bold and Bold Italic may be used for text emphasis, a job for which the Heavy is to dark. Malabar received a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design at the Type Directors Club of New York TDC2 competition in 2009.

Maclean's is a weekly Canadian newsmagazine with a broad editorial mission. A typical issue covers everything from violence on the other side of the globe to the largest pumpkin grown in a local county. In 2001, Maclean's invited Rod McDonald to become part of the design team to renovate" the 96-year-old publication. The magazine wanted to offer its readers a typographic voice that was professional, clean, and easy to read. Above all, the typeface had to be able to speak about the hundreds of unrelated subjects addressed in each issue while remaining believable and uncontrived. A tall order, perhaps? Now add in that this would be the first text typeface ever commissioned by a Canadian magazine. McDonald, who some have called Canada's unofficial "typographer laureate," took on the challenge. McDonald used two historic models as the basis for Laurentian's design: the work of French type designer Claude Garamond, and that of the English printer and type founder, William Caslon. From Garamond Laurentian acquired its humanist axis, crisp serifs and terminals that mimic pen strokes. Caslon's letters are less humanistic, with a more marked contrast in stroke weight and serifs that appear constructed rather than drawn. These traits also made their mark on Laurentian. Using these two designs as a foundation, McDonald drew Laurentian with the narrow text columns and small type sizes of magazine composition in mind. He gave his letters strong vertical strokes and sturdy serifs, a robust x-height and a slightly compressed character width A tall order, per McDonald's genius is evident in the face's legibility, quiet liveliness and in the openness of the letters. The result is a typeface that not only met Maclean's demanding design brief, but also provides exceptional service in a wide variety of other applications. Laurentian is available in three weights of Regular, Semi Bold and Bold, with complementary italics for the Regular and Semi Bold, and a suite of titling caps."

Made in Germany, Referenz Grotesk is a typeface full of references referring to the type design history of Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. Its typographic history holds a broad spectrum of shapes and characters, including F.H. Ernst Schneidler (1882–1956), Imre Reiner (1900–1987), Walter Brudi (1907–1987), Kurt Weidemann (1922–2011) and Frank Heine (1964–2003). During extensive research phases for Referenz Grotesk included collection and analysis. This led to further research in the Academy’s collection and archive where the majority of Weidemann’s estate is housed next to works of other designers and professors like F.H. Ernst Schneidler and Walter Brudi. Another place of research was the typesetting workshop where Schneidler had previously taught and worked. Some of his freshly cast fonts were tested and used there for the first time and are still stored in several of the type cases. Regarding the more recent history, for instance about the Emigre designer Frank Heine, former colleagues and professors have been consulted. These studies resulted in the new font Referenz Grotesk that includes traces of Kurt Weidemann’s Corporate as well as calligraphic hints that link to Schneidler’s Stuttgarter Schule (Stuttgart School) where writing played an important role during the form finding process. For the regular text fonts these features are integrated in a subtle manner whereas several alternative glyphs pick up more expressive forms. The final sans serif type family has a clarity and contemporary straightness that becomes more characteristic in its heavier weights. Additionally more than 60 alternative glyphs per weight allow for individual combinations that can be tailored specifically for each application and context. They open up a broad range of visual expressions, from subtle to playful and eccentric characteristics. Referenz Grotesk is available in six weights: Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, Extra Bold and Black, plus italics. In addition, the family includes multiple OpenType functions such as Stylistic Sets, Tabular Figures and Case Sensitive forms. Who is not totally captured when looking at those marvelously handmade old manuscripts, where letters, borders and elements were so masterfully realized with some touch of Gold leaf (or Silver in some cases) that was making of an ordinary book a piece of art? The name of the pack “Illuminated” comes, like the ancient art used for the old manuscripts, from the latin word “Illuminare” (to light up) and it’s symbol of great value, preciousness and beauty skilfully created with patience and love from artists for centuries. What we at Fontscafe wanted to give you was the opportunity to get a whole “ready to use” set of fonts that could, in a modern and revised form, give that “Illuminated” feeling to our “Digital Era”. Mein Schatz's (in English: Darling) characteristic feature is the availability of ligatures in the expert set. The font offers – among others – the ligatures sh, sp, st, tz and alternatives for f, l and z. The expert set’s majuscules have curved elements in addition, thus allowing designers to put the typeface to highly individualistic use for displays and logos. Another feature of the font are the two different figure systems. Further to the normal table figures, Mein Schatz also offers old style figures, mainly for use in continuous text. Table figures as well as old style figures are available in all four cuts, i.e. regular, bold, italic and bolditalic. Furthermore designers will enjoy the additional curved ornaments. The curved ornaments and ligatures don’t only add a playful character to the typeface but also hence the name.

Kirshaw is not your grandfather's sans serif from the 1950s and 1960s. All those old classics like Helvetica, Futura, Franklin Gothic, and Univers are showing their age like an old Elvis Presley song. Kirshaw is a clean, rounded design with sharp contrasting edges. Like those classics, Kirshaw is easy to read in small body copy and captions, plus it's delightfully modern and stylish for headlines and logos. I designed Kirshaw and Kirkly while undergoing cancer treatment at Stanford Medical Center. Font design was always in the back of my mind and now I had extra time. Kirshaw is a distinctive, modern, easy-to-read sans serif family consists of 14 weights (including italics). It’s an Adobe Latin 3 Character Set containing 350 glyphs per style (including special characters).

Years ago, by happenstance, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly found an old decrepit typewriter in an abandoned lot with tall grass in Brooklyn. They kept it around their apartment for two years. Then one day they decided that it was time to move and they planned to throw the old typewriter away. But it was so beautiful they wanted to keep at least a part of it. So they decided on keeping the keys. They kept the keys in a brown bag until one fine day the keys were introduced to a camera. It was a match made in heaven that resulted in some beautiful quirky images of typewriter keys. These images were the inspiration for Backspacer. They were scanned, traced and turned into a working typeface by Zuzana Licko.

BILLIARD was born from the numerous sketches André Toet did for the design of a series of postage stamps in 2011. It’s a capital monospaced and ‘fun’ alphabet, based on the classic billiard play with two white and one red ball. Actually snooker and pool were derived from this rather old sport! In Europe it used to be a sport played by elderly people, practiced in traditional bars, including the smell of beer and the at that time prevalent smell of cigarettes and cigars. These days billiard, snooker and pool are quite popular once again with young people. Uniform Rounded is a type family based on the 2014 Miller Type Foundry release, Uniform. This superfamily is comprised of three widths (regular, condensed, and extra condensed) each with six weights. The result is a fun and playful typeface that is extremely versatile and is a great asset for any project on any medium. Uniform Rounded is a multi-width geometric type family designed around the circle. The O of the Regular width is based on a circle, the O of the Condensed width is based on 1.5 circles stacked (with straight sides) and the O of the Extra Condensed width is based on two circles stacked with straight sides as well, and all other characters are derived from this initial concept. This unique idea creates a remarkably fresh type family that bridges the gap between circular geometric typefaces and condensed straight-sided typefaces. Uniform Rounded also includes many opentype features like Old Style Figures, Tabular Lining Figures, Alternate characters, Ligatures and more.

Corpesh was drawn in Adobe Illustrator during the wee hours of the night. It is a single weight set of fonts, no bold version. As is/was much of what I have done over the last year, it was created purely to pass time. As a self taught amateur in this field, I only do this for the enjoyment it brings me. This typeface is being released early, at the same time as 'Brainstroke', for exactly the same reason that typeface is, that being a health crisis. I know this typeface is not complete, with, as mentioned, no bold version, and probably never will have.

Talbot Type Keymer is inspired by Margaret Calvert's Transport typeface, designed for the British road sign system in the early 1960s. Keymer mixes geometric and humanist traits to achieve a modern, clean, elegant appearance. It is a legible and versatile text and display face available in seven weights. Keymer features an extended character set to include old style numerals, accented characters for Central European languages and bespoke characters in the italic for a more flowing look.

Rhaetic or Raetic (/ˈriːtɪk/), also known as Rhaetian, was a Tyrsenian language spoken in the ancient region of Rhaetia in the eastern Alps in pre-Roman and Roman times. It is documented by around 280 texts dated from the 5th up until the 1st century BC, which were found through northern Italy, southern Germany, eastern Switzerland, Slovenia and western Austria, in two variants of the Old Italic scripts. Rhaetic is largely accepted as being closely related to Etruscan.

Typefaces with very thin verticals and fat, square serifs were popular in the 19th century for display. Hollywood helped associate this style with the Old West, but reference books identify some of it as Italian style. WyomingSpaghetti, part of an extended family of typefaces, has a name which combines these two associations. Most typefaces of this type are very condensed, but this one is not. The letter o is nearly circular, which is rather unusual in this style.
