The designers of wood type in the 1880s did not lack for inspiration or imagination. From extremely ornate designs to ultra compressed or condensed alphabets, there was no shortage of variety. Saddle Tramp JNL is one such compressed font. Its wide, bold design coupled with its squat appearance allows for multiple words in a headline without overuse of page space.

This multipurpose display alphabet combines medieval-inspired uppercase letters drawn by famed book illustrator Walter Crane with charming, if somewhat quirky, lowercase letters by J. W. Weekes. From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

British designer Thomas Oldfield, who brought you Hombre BT and Reaper, has scratched out another typeface, this one called Jerk Chicken BT. “Byblos” is the name of a town in Lebanon and the name of a famous hotel in St. Tropez. Some time ago I discovered their original logo in an old french magazine, just 5 by 3 centimeters small without any text, address, telephone number not even a picture. They did not need that, that’s how famous the hotel and its old logo was. Well they abandoned their identity when the place was sold to a big chain – I think. But the logotype, just those five letters inspired me to this new font. It evokes times past and has a little Bauhaus in it – as well as a really modern touch, all depends on the way you use it. It could be you’ve never heard of Kapsalon and I will forgive you for that. Kapsalon is a Dutch word, meaning ‘hairdresser’s’. Since 2003 it is also a very popular snack food, which consists of french fries, döner kebab, lettuce, sambal, garlic sauce and melted Gouda cheese, served in an aluminium tray. I have to admit that I have never eaten a Kapsalon myself, as I am not too fond of fast food. I named this font package Kapsalon, because, like its namesake, it consists of several unrelated elements that work really well when combined.

Really, there is nothing stupid about this font. In some strange and weird way, I just thought that the name sounded like something eye-catching - in the same way that the font is eye-catching! It may look like your average comic font, but it's not! I carefully put a lot of funk, twist, comic and a spoonful of pizzadude into each and every letter. The result is a bouncy crazy looking comic font. Oh, I almost forgot - I topped the letters with a spoonful of grafitti mixed with the sounds of a party...that's the recipe for this lovely multilingual font! :)
