Kianda typeface was created as a non-classic, sport logo typeface. Now it has only one style with Latin and Cyrillic uppercase, numerals and punctuation. Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) was called the King of Printers and the Bodoni font owes its creation in 1767 to his masterful cutting techniques. Predecessors in a similar style were the typefaces of Pierre Simon Fournier (1712–1768) and the Didot family (1689-1836). The Bodoni font distinguishes itself through the strength of its characters and embodies the rational thinking of the Enlightenment. The new typefaces displaced the Old Face and Transitional styles and was the most popular typeface until the mid-19th century. Bodoni’s influence on typography was dominant until the end of the 19th century and, even today, inspires new creations. Working with this font requires care, as the strong emphasis of the vertical strokes and the marked contrast between the fine and thick lines lessens Bodoni’s legibility, and the font is therefore better in larger print with generous spacing. The Bodoni of Morris F. Benton appeared in 1911 with American Type Founders.

Josef Týfa first published the Academia typeface in 1967-68. It was the winning design from competition aimed at new typeface for scientific texts, announced by Grafotechna. It was cut and cast in metal in 1968 in 8 and 10 point sizes of plain, italic and semi-bold designs. In 2003 Josef Týfa with František Štorm began to work on its digital version. During 2004 Týfa approved certain differences from the original drawings in order to bring more original and timeless feeling to this successful typeface. Vertical stem outlines are no more straight, but softly slendered in the middle, italics were quietened, uppercase proportions brought closer to antique principle. Light and Black designs served (as usual) as starting points for interpolation of remainig weights. The new name Academica distinguishes the present digital transcription from the original idea. It comprises Týfa’s rational concept for scientific application with versatility to other genres of literature.

LTC Goudy Initials has been a best-seller since it was reformatted to font format by P22 in 2005. We decided that while it works very well at medium sizes, when it was used extra large, the outlines were not as true to Frederic Goudy’s 1917 drawings as they could be. This extremely heavy informal script was created in the early 1920s by Lucian Bernhard. Like so many of his designs, this typeface has its roots in his earlier poster work. Bernhard Brushscript invokes a rather warm, pleasant feeling despite a number of quirky characters. Originally created for the Bauer Foundry of Frankfurt, Germany, the face looks as though it’s been drawn with a brush and contains looping ascenders and descenders. Plantin is a Renaissance Roman as seen through a late–industrial-revolution paradigm. Its forms aim to celebrate fine sixteenth century book typography with the requirements of mechanized typesetting and mass production in mind. How did this anomalous design come about? In 1912 Frank Hinman Pierpont of English Monotype visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, returning home with “knowledge, hundreds of photographs, and a stack of antique typeset specimens including a few examples of Robert Granjon’s.” Together with Fritz Stelzer of the Monotype Drawing Office, Pierpont took one of these overinked proofs taken from worn type to use as the basis of a new text face for machine composition. Body text set in Plantin produces a dark, rich texture that’s suited to editorial and book work, though it also performs its tasks on screen with ease. Its historical roots lend the message it sets a sense of gravity and authenticity. The family covers four text weights complete with italics, with four condensed headline styles and a caps-only titling cut. Eurostile® is one of the most important designs from the Italian font designer Aldo Novarese. It was originally produced in 1962 by the Nebiolo foundry as a more complete version of the earlier Microgramma, a caps-only font designed by Novarese and A. Butti. Pacific Clipper has its roots in an old 1930s showcard lettering style. An extra bold version of this sign painter’s relic is shown in Carl Holmes' wonderful book on lettering. It may be described as what happens when Rudolf Koch's Kabel Heavy meets ATF's Novel Gothic. Also known as Sam’s Tune, Pacific Clipper’s noteworthy features include wedged crossbars in the capital A, E, F, and H. Overcurving is present in the capital B, D, P, and R while vertical strokes in the lowercase b, d, h, k, l, and t are chopped off obliquely. Figures in Pacific Clipper are also refreshingly different, particularly the number 4. This lettering favorite turned retro typeface has been extended to include a variety of weights. In 2006 the art director of Emotion, a women’s psychology magazine, asked me to design a copy typeface for them. Before I actually got the job I started to work on a serif. I wanted it to be feminine but still clear and modern. On one hand there are the floral round elements and on the other hand the angular serifs. In the composition I wanted the two extremes to work together. All the other elements had to be harmonized. The proportions needed to match the magazine’s requirements. The ascenders and descenders are short enough to work in narrow columns but long enough to work in small sizes. As you can imagine, the emotion-job never happened. Verse is now a serif and a san-serif with 7 weights with italics and smallcaps. In copy you should not get heavier than Heavy. Extrabold and Ultrabold work best in display.

I don’t think I’m a capricious person, but right now, due to the enormous amount of renovation work on our home, I do get bad moods quite often! Capricious is a hand painted all-caps font: I used my favourite Chinese ink, a brush and very rough paper to get the desired ‘eroded’ effect. It is quite a heavy display font, so I wouldn’t really set a text in it, but it works really well for headlines, catching titles and products that need some pepper!

Advertisers Gothic is bold and brash, like the city it comes from, Chicago. It was designed by the accomplished German-American matrix engraver, Robert Wiebking, for the Western Type Foundry in 1917. Andrade is a new typeface designed by Dino dos Santos in 2005. This typeface was inspired in the typographic work of Manoel de Andrade de Figueiredo (b.1670-d.1735), Nova Escola para Aprender a Ler, Escrever e Contar, printed in 1722 at Offcina de Bernardo da Costa de Carvalho. This is one of the most important books, and almost forgotten, about Portuguese calligraphy and typography, and the work of Andrade de Figueiredo is among the most amazing examples of type design of the Eighteenth Century. His work inspired Ventura da Silva, a Portuguese typographer, who in 1803 published a book named Regras Methodicas, where he redesigns some of Figueiredo's type specimens. But Ventura's purpose was to create a more elegant and readable typeface than Didot and Bodoni. This kind of typeface used to be called leitura and is a transition between the baroque and modern typography. Andrade is a brilliant text typeface and is available in Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Ligatures, Ligatures Italic, Swashes and Ornaments. Andrade is my tribute to Portuguese typography and to the work of Manoel de Andrade de Figueiredo in particular.

In TT Knickerbockers Grotesk you will find unusual characters, stylistic alternatives and ligatures. TT Knickerbockers Script is a bright and at the same time a little restrained brushpen script with a slight touch of aristocracy. TT Knickerbockers Script consists of 967 characters and also contains a huge number of contextual alternatives and ligatures. For all lowercase and uppercase letters of basic Latin and Cyrillic alphabets we have drawn 236 swashes which, depending on the context, can appear both at the beginning and at the end of a letter.
