In the sketches that formed the basis for his typeface Biome, Crossgrove experimented with inner and outer shapes in different styles, adapted letters to the form of the super-ellipse, and added curves only to remove these again. His challenge was to find a harmonious and coherent approach that provided sufficient contrast with existing fonts. Biome is essentially in the sans serif tradition and the letters exhibit only minor variations in terms of line thickness. There is still a suggestion of the super-ellipse at many points, but this never becomes the predominant design factor. While most of the terminals of the vertical strokes are only slightly rounded, the horizontals and diagonals have pronounced arches and it is these that basically determine the round and soft character of the typeface. The more unconventionally shaped letters, such as the lowercase 'g' with its two semi-open counters and the 'k' and 'x' with their crossbars, provide Biome with an individual personality. And this effect is emphasized by the generously rounded links in the 'v' and 'w' and the uppercase 'M' and 'N'. Biome has been designed as a typeface super-family. From the near hairline Extra Light to the amply proportioned Ultra, there are seven clearly differentiated weights and three tracking widths. There are oblique italic versions of all variants. Pavement is a display typeface, based on the roughness and hardness of a street tile. I wanted to make a font with some real streetvibes, so it can easily be used for all kind of street cultures like music, (stencil) graffiti, street-art and fashion.

The Colville fonts began their existence in 2015 as a project-specific typeface, made to be used on a custom-made headstone commemorating Canadian artist Alex Colville (1920-2013) and his wife Rhoda Wright. For that purpose, some initial shapes were modelled after letters Colville himself had used on a Governor General gold medal he designed in the mid-1970s. From there started a year-long project that culminated in a set of four comprehensive fonts ranging in weight from Light to Bold, each containing over 750 glyphs to cover Pan European language support, stylistic alternates, five sets of figures, automatic fractions, and some ornaments rooted in Alex Colville’s art. These fonts exhibit a strong art deco aesthetic that has always been a favourite of architects, metal casters, and sign makers. This is a very humanist geometry alternating from the precisely calculated to the curvy and lithe, subtle contrast, flat stroke stops, and airy proportions that make for a counterspace built for accommodation and comfort. Wolfsblood is a new display face by Jim Ford, adapted from hand-lettered logos spawned by punk rock bands like The Misfits and Bad Brains. The style can be traced back further to Hollywood and the explosion of low-budget exploitation, horror and sci-fi films, which also had an influence in punk rock. Wolfsblood captures this bizarre dark-spirited lettering which has become a staple in the designer‘s work for bands and posters. The Wolfsblood font has an expanded character set with borders, dingbats (yes, Bats!), and contextual ligatures programmed to give the typeface a random appearance by default. Knip, in Dutch, means ‘cut’. You can tell by the glyphs that I made this font by cutting out the shapes from black paper, gluing it onto white paper and photographing the result so I could digitalise it! I don’t make too many cut out fonts, as it is a lot of work and it often leads to nothing. Besides that, I depend on the paper supply from my kids and they happened to have black paper this time!

MVB Gryphius is a digitization of uncommon type from an era normally associated with the work of Nicolas Jenson. FREIBEUTER NR is a typical Western font but this is based on a FAMOUS Motorcycle Club from the television that everyone knows. The word FREIBEUTER is the German version of pirate. FREIBEUTER did in earlier times what pirates do, but they do it with the government togetherness. NR stands for NIEDERRHEIN, this is the area where I live and work. The PATCH Version is the best way to make fast a nice Banner or Patch with this font. You can use the WrapTEXT tool in Illustrator or Photoshop to wrap the banner in al forms!

Beyond broadcast Like Truman Burbank, the star of The Truman Show, FS Truman was born for TV. You’ll know it from Sky One’s on-screen trails and announcements, but it’s just as at home in other media. Its starting point was the skeleton of a highly legible, space-saving, corporate font with some of FS Dillon’s geometric discipline built in. Its distinctive tone of voice and “ownability” are in its boxy but friendly shapes, and characters with hybrid features. FS Truman’s weights and widths were honed to work at TV screen resolutions. A face for TV it may have been, but this is a font that works on every level, on screen, in print, in headlines, in listings, in longer text, in tight corners and open spaces. The space-saver Compact, condensed but crystal clear, FS Truman comes into its own where a lot needs to be said in not a lot of space. Its letter spacing allows the type room to breathe, even at small sizes, while its fulsome x-height and diminutive descenders pave the way for tighter leading. A natural for headlines and titles over three or four lines. “Hybrid” features With every font, Fontsmith look for crafty new ways to imbue letterforms with a consistent character. The idea with FS Truman was to introduce “hybrid” features. In open letters such as “c” and “s”, for example, the top terminals have straight, vertical cuts while their lower terminals have a more angular, cursive finish. Boxy, spacious forms with unusual curves and angles create not just highly legible and efficient letters but strongly distinctive ones, too.

I am a firm believer in the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, for the last 10 years (ever since I became a father), I have been serving my family a healthy breakfast. I live in The Netherlands, so the main portion of breakfast is bread, but I try to serve something ‘nice’ every day. Like strawberries, yoghurt with banana and brown sugar (not too much sugar!), oatmeal porridge or granola. I myself like Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) for breakfast, but I am afraid my kids won’t eat that in the morning… Power Breakfast is a handmade display font. Yes, it is wobbly, yes, it is uneven, but that’s what’s so darn good about it!

In the typedesign industry the terms ‘nova’, ‘neue’, ‘next’, ‘new’ are often used to refer to a typeface that has been modified in different ways: redesign, technical readjustments, greater number of characters, etc. At Latinotype we are now starting to use the word ‘niu’ to refer to these kinds of typefaces. Hernández Niu was designed by César Araya and Daniel Hernández. The font is based on the design of Hernández Bold: the thickest weight has been adapted to fit small text better.
