The Scriptorium got its start in the early days of personal computers with a few font designs for the Commodore 64, and the very first font which we did back then in the early 1980s was a gothic calligraphy font. That style of fonts - the medieval, gothic and black letter genre - has always been the backbone of our collection, but with recent releases we've stayed away from them to introduce a bit more variety. Well, with our new Zauberer font the antique, medieval and gothic look is back with a vengeance. Zauberer isn't a true medieval calligraphy style. It's based on early printed type from Germany which combines calligraphic elements with decorative embellishments from the woodcut printing era. The result is decorative and antique looking and rather appealing. The name comes from the German word for a magician or illusionist.

Madison is a classic slab serif stencil typeface. It is reminiscent of the days before computers when the best way to reproduce letters quickly was to stencil them.

It was during a visit to the Roman Forum that we were inspired by a seemingly unique style of lettering on a tablet among the ruins. The Latin message was chiseled in a condensed, free-style manner, almost as if it were intended as a personal note. While the stone showed only the capital letter forms of the period, we felt the creation of a lowercase would help extend the fonts usability and also add a whimsical feel to the design.

OffBit is a font type derived from Bitmap with various variations from each box. The term bitmap comes from computer programming terminology, which means simply a bit map, a spatially mapped array of bits. Now, together with PowerType, it usually refers to a similar concept of an array of pixels that are mapped spatially and into various shapes such as dots and other models. Rasteroids Monospace is a typographic flashback to computing of the mid 1980s, when 9-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art, and most home computer displays were TVs hooked up to RF modulators. Rasteroids not only captures the dot-matrix printer look, but recreates the rasterized appearance of text on those lower-resolution monitors. The concept for ‘Scroll’ came to me fully formed when setting out to design a bold display typeface. The premise for this was to base the letter-forms on a rolled strip of paper. A simple enough idea in principle but one I hadn't seen before. After working out the basic characters I set about completing the full effect I was after. This was achieved by applying a suitably incised line following the curve at each turning point to convey the important three-dimensional aspects of a scroll. Although the phonetic name personifying the font was there as a working title from the outset, I didn't commit to it fully until everything was completely resolved.

“PGF Dinos” is a low contrast round typeface that resembles handmade American ‘Sign Painting’ in such the upper portion of the characters is bigger than the lower one, what gives the font a more playful and friendly personality. Another remarkable feature is its hooked terminals in characters such as C, G or S, heightening the differences between similar characters. “PGF Dinos” Family is composed of 10 different weights ranging from Hairline to Extra Black plus Italics and a full set of Dingbats. Personally I think a brush font should have the word ‘Brush’ in its name. It’s not that easy finding a name - you need some magic to come up with a good one! Magical Brush is a completely handmade font. I used a small brush (a number 3 to be precise) and Chinese Ink. I wanted just a little ‘erosion’, so I used copier paper rather than my expensive French water color paper (which is quite rough). Magical Brush comes in the normal variant and a chickenpox one. Use it for your posters, your book covers and your Christmas invitations!

The titles struck me as handsome -- the titles and captions and place labels on a page I have of Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique. I'd already modeled Antiquarian Scribe after the neat, slanted penmanship used in the body text of Chatelain's famous old world atlas; now I felt compelled to digitize this legible roman handlettering, as well. The letterforms are strong and handsome. They've got a certain deft, organic character. A personality. I can't fully explain it. But this antique alphabet seems suitable for many applications. Antiquarian is a full-featured font that works well with Antiquarian Scribe.
