Hand-hewn along the banks of the mighty River Raisin in Southeast Michigan, this heavy block typeface is the perfect addition to any design project in need of a stout, yet fun typographical treatment. Before this font made its journey into the outside world, it began its life as a 4B pencil sketch on cheap inkjet printer paper, as many of my projects do. This typeface, not unlike me, doesn't waste its time with finesse, or convention, and truly doesn't mind being a little bit on the thick side. There is a time for refinement and propriety, but this ain't it.

Caslon Antique is a decorative American typeface that was designed in 1894 by Berne Nadall. It was originally called "Fifteenth Century", but was renamed "Caslon Antique" by Nadall's foundry, Barnhart Bros. & Spindler, in the mid-1920s. The design of the typeface is meant to evoke the Colonial era. Early printers would reuse metal type over and over again, and the faces would become chipped and damaged from use. Caslon Antique emulates this look. Despite the name, it is not a member of the Caslon family of typefaces. The renaming is believed to have been a marketing maneuver to boost the popularity of a previously unpopular typeface by associating it with the highly popular Caslon types. Caslon Antique is popular today when a "old-fashioned" or "gothic" look is desired. Edison Swirl, with its terminals majestically looping and twirling in a circular fashion, quickly takes us back to the Victorian era of type. This unusual fancy face, which dates back to the early 1900s, distinguishes itself by employing splayed M & N caps. Some letterforms also contain double cross-strokes for added interest. Dolsáb was designed from scratch with uniqueness in mind. The subtle movement from thick to thin and the variants of sharp to rounded make this cutting edge san serif a must have. The inspiration for Dolsab was a simple pairing of a rhombus and calligraphy. While neither of those two elements can be seen in their entirety in any instance, the influence of both is strong. The rhombus can be notice on most ascenders like on the lowercase t & l, for example. And the calligraphy inspiration is most easily captured on the descenders such as the lowercase y & g. The most beautiful characteristics of Dolsab is definitely the calligraphy-influenced movement. These features really stand out on the lowercase a & e. It's almost amusing to let your eye follow the contours of those two letter forms as they travel from thick to thin, sharp to rounded and back again. Users are welcomed to try all font styles of Dolsab in any applique of their choosing. However, it will be quickly noticeable that only Dolsab Air & Demi (the thiner of the styles) will be best suited for body copy. Personally I like to see these letterforms as large as they can be to really showcase the subtle movement, especially in Dolsab Heavy where these movements become much more dramatic. You'll never know what really works best unless you experiment. Dolsab surely isn't the answer to all projects, but it's certainly worth trying. No other typeface moves quite like Dolsáb.

Sleeve Notes: A font from the analogue age. Inspired by album covers and hand-written song lyrics. Sleeve Notes is an experimental script font and all-caps pair with a loose hand-written style that explores the golden-age of record stores, vinyl albums, cassettes and CDs. It imagines our teenage selves kicking back with a coke (oversized headphones on) discovering a new band and studying the notes on their latest album. Besides production credits, the best sleeves (otherwise known as liner notes) included photos, cool artwork and hand-written song lyrics that gave the listener a human connection to the mind of the artist. This font embraces it's subtle ink blotches and rough edges; all imperfections that build to create a sense of a hastily written lyric, set-list or just a fun little scribble. The package includes six fonts in total; the regular script with two complete sets of alternatives, then two sets of all-caps, and finally the special characters font that features a decorative alphabet plus symbols and underlines.
