Sitting in a diner and looking upon a wall full of nostalgia, there hangs a picture of another older diner in some Northern city. The lettering from it's rooftop sign almost screams "Make a font out of this!"... so Jeff Levine did... "Hash and Beans JNL".

Based on the all caps decorative face Fournier le Jeune of 1768 by Pierre Simon Fournier for the Peignot Foundry. This version uses more elaborate "Vouge Initials" caps which were offered by ATF in 1920s. Because of the decorative nature of this design, a full character set is not included, but accented characters and basic punctuation are included.

Araby Rafique is a part of the Take Type Library, winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. This font was designed by the British artist Tehmina Rafique. The forms lean sometimes left, sometimes right, which, combined with the stroke contrast, gives the font a dynamic character. Other distinguishing characteristics are the mix of teardrop and fine hair strokes and the handwritten style. This font is good for very short texts and headlines, especially when the look of the text is as important as its meaning.

The Vtg Stencil series of fonts from astype are based on real world stencils. The Germany No.1 design was derived from authentic antique German stencil-plates. » pdf specimen « Surprisingly these stencil-plates offer a high contrast Didot design very similar to the French stencils produced and sold till today. The production time of these stencils is in the range of the German imperial period (1871‒1918). Of course the usage period was even longer. The font styles PAINT and SKETCH include 4 additional variations of base glyphs and figures. An extensive random function will mix the glyphs as you type - on proper OpenType-savvy apps like Adobe InDesign only. All styles offer an extended Latin character set.

This unusual penscript is based on letterforms discovered in the classic Zanerian Manual of Alphabets and Engrossing. The economy and the sinuous quality of the pen strokes, combined with the severe backslant, suggest--without mimicking--the grace and beauty of fine Arabic calligraphy. The Opentype, Truetype and Windows Postscript versions of this font contain both the Windows 1252/ANSI character set and the 1250/Central European character set.

Vtg Stencil Germany No.101 is modeled after historic stencil plates from Bavaria. The design is a blackletter chancery, a romantic reprise of a style that was common in German writing offices from the 14th to the 16th century. The flourishes stylistically quote the Baroque period. A talented mind, perhaps around 1890, has transformed the textura shapes into a modular stencil system. Many elements are repeated throughout the glyph set - see for example the initial swashes on the letters A, B, U etc. Overall, this decorative blackletter doesn’t look like a stencil design. Maybe it was originally used by a sign painter, and all the typical stencil bridges would have been painted over in the final work. Tall, chunky title-friendly sans serif capitals.

Mosca means 'fly' in Spanish - the flying type, not the one in your jeans…). The font is quite lively, loose and elegant at the same time.

Grafiker means 'Graphic Designer' in German. This fat, colored, uneven font with a 1001 uses was loosely based on the work of designers Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980) and Jean Carlu (1900 - 1997). The glyphs were hand-drawn with a 0.5 roller ball and colored in with Chinese ink, using a stiff brush. The result is a lively, rather unusual font.

Rakugaki means "scribble" in Japanese. This font expresses casual handwriting with warmth and simplicity. Adelbrook is a dynamic serif typeface that keeps calm. Semper is slightly angular since it is in part based on callygraphic lettering. That is not as evident as in the italic of Jenson Classico. On the contrary, the text looks even and harmonious, which makes the typeface easy to use. The name is Latin meaning always, but you knew that already. Semper was released in 1993.

Équipage is a French word meaning ‘crew’. It is used for the crew on boats, airplanes, but it also applies to horse-drawn carriages and all that goes with it. Originally the word means ‘to fit out’ and it is probably derived from the Norse word ‘skipa’, which means ‘arrange, fit out a ship’. Then, if you’re really interested, the word ‘ship’ hails from this same word, just like the Danish ‘skib’, Middle Dutch ‘ship’, Dutch ‘schip’ and German ‘Schiff’. See? You learn something every day! Équipage is a really nice, handmade serif font. It is quite elegant and would look fantastic on labels, postcards and book covers. Alien Alphabet is inspired by the ideas of change, transformation, creative deconstruction and mutual penetration of various cultures, languages, and opposing cognitive systems, which seem to be prevalent in our 'globalized' civilization. It appears as various visual constructs -- archetypal symbolism, pieces of the world alphabets, socio-cultural icons, mathematical formulae, etc., -- broke down into pieces and were reassembled in a way that carried traces of previous meanings. However, this contradictory mutation invokes enigmatic meanings and emotions begging for further definition and interpretation. Alien Alphabet shapes arranged in linear sequential manner tend to evoke a sense of written language. The fact that a message cannot be understood does not really change its emotional appeal. Moreover, the less message can be deciphered, the more seems to be the appeal -- for it triggers our imagination. In fact, we may not want to know the actual meaning because deep inside we are afraid that this might be just another alien dry-cleaning receipt.

Bohemio was designed in memory of Gunter Böhmer, an artist famous for his many book covers of the 1950s in Germany. The cover I took as an inspiration for this font is that of a book called Stiller (by Max Frisch). Bohemio sounds similar to "Böhmer" (which means the one from Bohemia) and it is also an alliteration to artisty.
